Career role
DevOps Engineer
DevOps engineers build the systems that take code from a developer's machine to production safely and often: build pipelines, automated tests, infrastructure as code, containers and monitoring. They sit between development and operations, and automate everything they can.
What the job involves
- Build CI/CD pipelines that test and deploy every change.
- Define servers and cloud resources as code.
- Package applications in containers and run them reliably.
- Monitor systems, respond to incidents and improve reliability.
Core skills
- Linux and the command line
- Scripting (Python, Bash)
- Git
- CI/CD pipelines
- Docker and Kubernetes
- A cloud platform and infrastructure as code
Your learning path
Work through the steps in order. Each one links to the lessons and practice to use.
Step 1: Scripting and automation
Automation is the heart of DevOps. Python is the most common scripting language for it.

- Linux administration basics
Step 2: Configuration and data formats
Pipelines and infrastructure are configured with JSON and YAML, and services talk over HTTP APIs.

- YAML
- HTTP, DNS and networking basics
Step 3: Version control and CI/CD
Every change goes through Git and an automated pipeline that builds, tests and deploys it.

- Git branching and pull requests
- GitHub Actions, GitLab CI or Jenkins
Step 4: Containers and orchestration
Containers package an app with everything it needs; orchestrators run many of them reliably.

- Docker
- Kubernetes
- Helm
Step 5: Cloud and infrastructure as code
Describe infrastructure in versioned files instead of clicking through consoles.

- AWS, Azure or Google Cloud
- Terraform
- Configuration management (Ansible)
Step 6: Monitoring and reliability
Know when something breaks, and why.

- Prometheus and Grafana
- Centralized logging
- Incident response and postmortems
Step 7: Prepare for interviews
Expect Linux, networking, scripting, container and CI/CD questions, plus troubleshooting scenarios.
Projects to build
Projects prove your skills and give you something to show.
- Containerize a small web app and run it with a database using Docker Compose.
- Build a CI pipeline that runs tests and deploys on every push.
- Write a Python script that checks a list of websites and reports failures.
Interview preparation
This path is a suggested order. Requirements differ between companies, so also read job descriptions for the roles you are applying to.
