Career role
Cybersecurity Analyst
Cybersecurity analysts protect an organization's systems and data. They monitor for threats, investigate alerts and incidents, find and fix vulnerabilities, and help teams build securely. Understanding how software, networks and operating systems work is the foundation.
What the job involves
- Monitor alerts and logs for signs of attack.
- Investigate and respond to security incidents.
- Find vulnerabilities in systems and applications, and track fixes.
- Advise teams on secure configuration and coding.
Core skills
- Networking (TCP/IP, DNS, HTTP)
- Linux and Windows administration
- Scripting (Python)
- Web application security
- SQL and log analysis
- Security tools (SIEM, scanners)
Your learning path
Work through the steps in order. Each one links to the lessons and practice to use.
Step 1: Programming and scripting
Security analysts automate checks, parse logs and read attack code. Python is the most useful language to start with.
Step 2: How memory bugs become vulnerabilities
Many serious vulnerabilities come from memory errors in C and C++ code. Understanding them explains how exploits work and why safe coding matters.
Step 3: Web and database security
Web applications are a common target. Learn how they work so you can see how they are attacked and defended.

- The OWASP Top 10 (SQL injection, XSS, broken access control)
- HTTPS, TLS and certificates
Step 4: Networks and operating systems
Attacks travel over networks and run on operating systems.

- TCP/IP, ports, DNS and firewalls
- Linux and Windows security basics
- Wireshark for packet analysis
- Nmap for network scanning (only on systems you are authorized to test)
Step 5: Security operations
Day-to-day analyst work: detecting, investigating and responding.
Not on Laviyx Learn yet
- SIEM tools such as Splunk or Microsoft Sentinel
- Incident response process
- Vulnerability management
- Certifications such as CompTIA Security+
Step 6: Prepare for interviews
Expect networking and security concept questions, log-analysis scenarios and questions on common attacks.
Projects to build
Projects prove your skills and give you something to show.
- Write a Python script that parses web server logs and flags suspicious requests.
- Set up a deliberately vulnerable practice app locally and fix each vulnerability you find.
- Build a home lab with a firewall and monitor its logs.
Interview preparation
This path is a suggested order. Requirements differ between companies, so also read job descriptions for the roles you are applying to.
