Career role

Full-Stack Developer

Full-stack developers build complete features end to end: the interface in the browser, the server and API behind it, and the database underneath. They need breadth across the whole web stack and enough depth to ship working products.

What the job involves

  • Build user interfaces and the APIs that power them.
  • Design database tables and write the queries the application needs.
  • Handle sign-in, validation and errors on both client and server.
  • Deploy and maintain the whole application.

Core skills

  • HTML, CSS and JavaScript
  • TypeScript across client and server
  • Node.js (or Python/Java) on the back end
  • SQL and database design
  • HTTP, REST APIs and JSON
  • Git and deployment

Your learning path

Work through the steps in order. Each one links to the lessons and practice to use.

  1. Step 1: The front-end foundations

Learn semantic HTML, modern CSS layout and responsive design first.

  2. Step 2: JavaScript in depth

Full-stack JavaScript means the same language runs in the browser and on the server. Learn it thoroughly, including asynchronous code.

  3. Step 3: TypeScript everywhere

Shared types between client and server catch mismatched data before it reaches users.

  4. Step 4: The server side

Build an HTTP server with Node.js, organize code into modules and manage dependencies with npm.

  5. Step 5: Databases and SQL

Design tables with keys and constraints, and write the joins and aggregations your features need.

  6. Step 6: Ship and maintain

Put the project in Git, deploy it, and keep it secure and observable.

    • Git and GitHub
    • Docker basics
  7. Step 7: Prepare for interviews

Expect JavaScript and SQL questions, a small coding task, and discussion of how you would design a feature end to end.

Projects to build

Projects prove your skills and give you something to show.

  • A notes or task app with sign-in, a REST API and a SQL database.
  • A small booking system with availability checks done inside a transaction.
  • A dashboard that fetches data from your own API and charts it.
