Career role
Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE)
Forward deployed engineers work closely with a company's customers to get its product working on their real problems. The role mixes software engineering, data work and customer communication: you write production code, integrate data, and often work on site or alongside the customer's team.
What the job involves
- Understand a customer's problem and turn it into a working technical solution.
- Integrate the product with the customer's data sources and systems.
- Write scripts, pipelines and features quickly, often against messy real-world data.
- Explain technical trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders and feed lessons back to the product team.
Core skills
- Strong coding in Python or Java
- SQL and data integration
- APIs, files and automation
- Debugging unfamiliar systems
- Communication with customers
- Fast, practical problem solving
Your learning path
Work through the steps in order. Each one links to the lessons and practice to use.
Step 1: Strong programming fundamentals
FDEs write real code under time pressure, so fluency matters. Python is common for data and integration work; Java appears in many enterprise systems.
Step 2: SQL and data modelling
Customer problems usually start with their data. Be confident querying, joining and reshaping data you have never seen before.
Step 3: Integrating systems: files, APIs and databases
Much of the job is connecting things: reading files, calling APIs, loading data into databases, and automating repetitive steps.
- Working with APIs
- Database connections
- Automation with Python
- Java file handling
- Practical Python practice

- Data pipelines and ETL
- Cloud platforms basics (AWS, Azure or GCP)
Step 4: Writing reliable code fast
Handle errors properly, structure code so others can maintain it, and debug confidently in systems you did not write.
- Python exceptions
- Java exceptions
- Java streams
- Python comprehensions
- Configuration, logging and shutdown

Step 5: Customer and communication skills
The most distinctive part of the role: understanding what a customer really needs and explaining technical options clearly.

- Requirements gathering and scoping
- Writing clear technical documentation
- Presenting solutions and trade-offs to non-engineers
Step 6: Prepare for interviews
FDE interviews often combine coding, data and SQL questions with a case-style problem about a customer scenario.
Projects to build
Projects prove your skills and give you something to show.
- Combine two public datasets with Python and SQL, and answer a real question with them.
- Build a script that pulls data from a public API, stores it in SQLite and produces a summary report.
- Write a short technical proposal for solving a business problem with data, as if for a customer.
Interview preparation
This path is a suggested order. Requirements differ between companies, so also read job descriptions for the roles you are applying to.
