Career role

Backend Developer

Backend developers build the server side of applications: the APIs, business logic and databases that front ends and other services rely on. They care about correctness, performance and security.

What the job involves

  • Design and build APIs used by web and mobile apps.
  • Model data and write efficient database queries.
  • Handle authentication, errors and edge cases safely.
  • Make services fast and reliable under load.

Core skills

  • Java, Python or Node.js (JavaScript/TypeScript)
  • SQL and database design
  • APIs and HTTP
  • Concurrency basics
  • Testing
  • Security fundamentals

Your learning path

Work through the steps in order. Each one links to the lessons and practice to use.

  1. Step 1: A server-side language in depth

Java, Python and JavaScript/TypeScript on Node.js are all widely used for backends. Learn one thoroughly, including its collections and error handling.

  2. Step 2: Data structures and clean code

Choosing the right collection and designing clear classes keeps services fast and maintainable.

  3. Step 3: Databases in depth

Backends live and die by their database. Learn design, indexes, transactions and query performance.

  4. Step 4: Concurrency and modern language features

Servers handle many requests at once. Understand threads, thread safety and functional-style code.

  5. Step 5: APIs, frameworks and deployment

Put it together in a real service that other programs call.

Projects to build

Projects prove your skills and give you something to show.

  • A REST API for a library or bookings system with a SQL database.
  • A URL shortener with caching.
  • A background job that processes uploaded CSV files.
